High-quality drug discovery service

Michael Smith Engineers, our distributor in the UK since 2006, has published the following story about the successful application of an HNPM micro annular gear pump at Sygnature Discovery. Michael Smith Engineers is well-known for its experience and expertise with heavy-duty pumps for industrial applications. However, they also have considerable expertise in the laboratory and life sciences sector.

Sygnature Discovery prides itself on offering a unique, high-quality, and tailored integrated drug discovery service to their clients. Work in Sygnature Discovery’s chemistry laboratories involves the synthesis of new chemical compounds to support client projects. Projects vary in scope and requirement, meaning that a flexible, reliable equipment base is vital.

For projects involving flow chemistry, pumps that deliver pyrophoric and reactive chemicals in a safe, programmed fashion, with minimal pulsation, across a wide range of flow rates and operating times are necessary. In practice, this means all wetted parts of the system must be inert to a wide range of aggressive matter. Leak-free pumping and stall detection are indispensable. Finally, the system should have a user-friendly interface to interrogate and vary pumping parameters.

The solution to all of these challenges was the mzr-6355 micro-annular gear pump from HNPM.

Decision criteria for this pump

  • The pump features chemically resistant materials for the key components
  • Free, simple control software (HNPM pump controller and Faulhaber motion manager for telemetry where necessary)
  • NPT fluidic connections allow for rapid tool-free interfacing to a variety of flow systems
  • Rapid calibration for accurate flow is possible across a range of viscosities, temperatures (20°C to -30°C) and pressure differentials (due to component choice) where necessary
  • Easy integration into existing pump network, with DIN-mountable control components and non-proprietary connectors

Raminder Mulla, says on behalf of the flow chemistry team at Sygnature: “Over the time we’ve had an HNPM mzr-6355 as part of our system, we have been able to realize considerable increases in compound output, reproducibility and safety. Consequently, it is now a linchpin of our setup. We haven’t seen any other pumping solution that offers such a consistent, controlled flow, with a user interface that makes onboarding new users very easy.”
